Hand built using earthenware mixed with black Earthstone, painted with white slip with sgraffito drawn lines. Blue underglaze applied after the first firing and then clear glazed with copper lustre on the rim and base line.

There are numerous different kinds of services provided to street homeless women and women exploited in prostitution but not all seem to be useful. This Totem mug was prompted by my own exasperation: hot chocolate, condoms, healthcare advice and kind words all have their place but they cannot, by themselves, solve real life problems for women in the sex trade. If a support service stops at these, it can very easily become and exploitation support service rather than a woman support service. The words come from leaflets and websites – often couched in the most self consciously, ‘socially aware,’ jargon. ‘Safe Sex,’ for a woman whose life is defined by danger is perhaps the most insanely surreal of all of them.
