Winter Solstice Pomegranate

Winter Solstice Pomegranate

Also known as ‘Yalda Pomegranate,’ this small bowl celebrates the shortest day and the longest night. Yalda/Winter Solstice is a Persian/Iranian traditional celebration when families get together and share pomegranates, water melon, stories, and much carousing.

Pomegranates in Iran, by this time, are dark red and the skin is quite thin. You can squeeze them and crush the fruit inside, take a sharp knife and pierce the skin, and release the juice to drink. Iranians call this ‘Aab Lambu,’

Made using deep, peat coloured clay, slip decorated in contrasting layers, with the sgraffito lines of the design etched into the surface. These pots have multiple firings to add enamels and lustres that achieve the jewel like effect.
