Pots as Chronicles 2013-14
Nightwalker, 2014
‘Nightwalker,’ depicts London by night seen through the eyes of Hossein, a Kurdish-Iranian refugee, and coloured by my image of London and my conversations with Hossein. The city has become a fairground for religious fanatics, political criminals, and colourful protestors. The fairground features Anjem Choudhary as the transvestite stripper, Putin appears as a jester in a paper crown, and Pussy Riot perform on top of the merry-go-round. Meanwhile, as Hossein drives his taxi through quieter parts of the city, a fox combs the ground for tasty morsels, and Londoners decorate their windows in preparation for Christmas.
Traveling West, 2013
‘Travelling West,’ depicts the journey of my friend, Hossein, from Iran to Britain. We see him as a nine year old, working in the bazaar in Qazvin and the road above that took him, aged twenty-six, to meet the smugglers who travel through the mountains to Turkey on horse-back to avoid check points. From Turkey he went by bus, truck, boat, plane and train to Calais, changing traffickers all the way, constantly swerving violence, danger and detection. In Calais, in the queue for food, provided by kindly French nuns, he met an old friend. They made a sleeping place in the cabin of an old crane until, one night, after numerous attempts, they got on a lorry which took them to England to a service station on the M1.
